Dropped off at The Big Drop Off

I AM SNORKELING at a site in Palau called The Big Drop Off.  I have snorkeled many amazing reefs around the world, from Ras Mohammed in the Red Sea to the barrier reef in Belize, but I have never seen anything quite like what I am gazing at today.

There is nothing here.  It drops off into an unfathomable, endless, turquoise-blue abyss.  I look down below me into vast nothingness.  It is eerie, creepy, intriguing.  Occasionally, an indolent shark, a giant sea turtle, a flapping stingray swims up out of nowhere.  They look at me and I look at them, then they silently swim away.  I am alone with these magnificent creatures.  I paddle along the wall, staring into infinite blue, excited, enchanted, afraid, mesmerized.

I have reached the end of the world.
