The Anointed Vessel

I AM IN TRAINING for Delta Air Lines in the Deep South. I have never spent much time in this area of the country before and, coming from San Francisco, I might as well be in a foreign land. Sweet tea, crowder peas and my classmates’ accents fascinate me. I didn’t know the name “Chrissy” had five syllables, but it does when you are from Mississippi.

Near the training center is a storefront church in a strip mall. Flames of Faith Tabernacle, a hand-lettered sign says in the window. I suspect there will be some terrific gospel music inside on Sunday. I wish I had the nerve to just show up and walk in.

On the radio, I hear an advertisement for an upcoming revival meeting. The evangelist is a woman, which captures my attention. Her ministry and accomplishments are described, her preaching focused on women, not men. I wonder what an old-fashioned revival is like. I imagine tents and folding chairs, lots of amens and hallelujahs, maybe fainting and healings. In closing, the voice on the radio ardently urges “Come hear God‘s anointed vessel!“

I’m completely amazed at this arrogant statement. Who designated HER God’s anointed vessel?
