Winner takes all
A PILOT IS TELLING me about his job interview at Flying Tigers. A huge freight airline, we also have a tiny passenger branch, a charter for the US military. We take troops to air force bases all over the world.
Jeff sat in a chair facing three interviewers, pilots themselves. They asked him, “Have you ever been in a bar fight?”
Jeff thought about this question, wondering what it had to do with piloting aircraft. He wasn’t sure how to answer it. What exactly were the interviewers getting at?
Freight pilots are a different breed. They fly all-nighters all over the world. They don’t work with flight attendants or passengers. No need to make PA announcements to a planeload of flowers, fish, electronic components or cattle. No one complains about a delay or criticizes their landings. They call themselves “freight dogs”.
Jeff finally, hesitatingly, answered yes, he’d been in a bar fight. The two pilots asked their next interview question:
“Did you win?”
